Deep in the South Waikato, two hours away from Auckland and not far from the mighty Waikato River, lies the township of Putaruru. It is located on and bisected by State Highway 1 between Tirau and Tokoroa, and at a crossroads between Rotorua and Te Awamutu.
On entering Putaruru heading south on Tirau Street, situated on the roundabout is an eyecatching circular building – a coronet of arched concrete and glass surrounded by native plantings and a water fountain. This 1960s architectural treasure was once the old Putaruru Post Office, which opened on the 19th June 1970, and now houses Cadillac Café as well as Motormania.
Enter the building and go back in time. You will discover a display of 1950’s and 60’s vehicles and memorabilia all set out in an ever-changing display that depicts this lovely peaceful, trouble free era. Connected to this popular attraction is a 50’s and 60’s rock and roll Cadillac Cafe. This too is adorned with pictures of the old greats such as Marilyn Munro, Elvis Presley, and Marlon Brando with rock and roll music coming from an old jukebox, which you can select yourself. A Cadillac couch in place completes the nostalgic feel.
