Polruan Castle was a fortified blockhouse erected in the 15th century. It was originally linked by a large chain to a similar structure on the west side of the river. The chain could be raised & lowered to defend Fowey harbour against attack from the sea. Two links of the chain can still be seen in Fowey museum. The building was last used in 1666 & subsequently fell into disrepair. It is now preserved as a scheduled ancient monument.
The Castle can be found at the far end of West Street, Polruan. Please use the public car park at the top of the hill, or cross on the small passenger ferry from Fowey.
