In 1979 two Buddhists from Hong Kong helped start the International Buddhist Society. At that time in the Lower Mainland, there was no place for a Buddhist to study and practice Chinese Mahayana Buddhism within an authentic Chinese temple.
To rectify this, the two purchase one acre of land in Richmond and also provided an initial $300,000 for the building fund. They wanted to establish an influential voice in North America for introducing and advancing Buddhist philosophy and practices.
The Main Gracious Hall was completed in September, 1983 and officially opened its doors to the public. Construction continued and two years later, the Thousand Buddha Hall and the Ksitigarbha Hall were opened.
Since then, the Temple has expanded and has in fact won several awards for both adding to the beauty of Richmond with the gardens and architecture and expanding diversity along with understanding.
The temple is open to the public but no picture or video taking is allowed within the temple buildings, please respect that rule.
It is also of some interest that although Buddhism is 2500 years old, the International Buddhist Temple is firmly planted within the 21st century with a very nice presence on the world wide web.
