Five giant bronze figures – two convict road builders, two athletic Aborigines, and one Red Coat trooper in full uniform – are now part of the permanent scenery in Lilianfels Park, Katoomba – in the beautiful Blue Mountains in NSW, Australia.
Australia’s foremost Rotary Centennial project, the Blue Mountains Road Builders Memorial, was officially opened by District 9690 Past Governor Lloyd Roever on Sunday, March 4 2007. The inspirational concept and passion of Katoomba Rotarian Past President Tom Colless, the bronze sculptures were masterfully created by world-recognised artist Terrance Plowright over two and a half years.
The memorial is one of the most significant Rotary Centennial projects in Australia. It is clearly badged as a Rotary project and is located adjacent to Australia’s premier tourist attraction – the Three Sisters rock formation in the Blue Mountains at Katoomba. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the Three Sisters attraction every year. Almost all will move on and inspect the Rotary Convict Road Builders Memorial – a wonderful contribution to Australian history.
The opening celebrations provided a happy day, with a genuine pioneering setting and received widespread coverage in local and national media. "Convicts" roamed the park freely, women and children were clad in colonial dresses and bonnets, a barbecue sizzled away with a background of tents and colourful bunting, and two members of the popular Australian bush band, the Bushwackers, entertained.
