"Opened in 1852 the prison was called the Presídio Tiradentes until 1938. In that year it became the Casa de Detenção de São Paulo and was the political prison of the capital city.

Demolished in 1972, just the gateway remained and was renamed the "Arco do Presídio".

Some of the inhabitants of the prison were Gino Meneghetti, famous criminal from the 1930s and Monteiro Lobato, author and political prisoner.

The gateway is now in front of a government owned bank.
