According to the city's website, the home was built between 1739 and 1751. In 1834 it got it's famous tenant, Maria Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo, the mistress of Brazil's emperor. Maria occupied the house until 1867. During these years, the place was known as the Palacete do Carmo. In 1975 it was added to the city's historical building list and became the headquarters for the city's department of culture. It went through a renovation in 1991. Since 1992 it's houses the Divisão de Iconografia e Museus do Departamento do Patrimônio Histórico Municipal.
