William Waldo planted this tree in 1872. He later became a county commissioner and judge, and expended great efforts to preserve this tree. Finally, in 1936, the City of Salem designated this plot of land as one of the world's smallest city parks, measuring 12 X 20 feet, and the tree's future was guaranteed.
