The earliest known reference to Clapham church,no doubt a wooden building dates from 1160.
During the period after the battle of Bannockburn when the North of England was left undefended, the church was burnt down during a raid by the Scots.
The church was dedicated in the late middle ages to St.Michael, but it is now dedicated to St.James the Apostle.
The Fine perpendicular Tower is by far the oldest part of the church and dates from Norman times of the early 14th century.
There are 3 bells which are rung regularly each Sunday, they date from,1594,1662 and 1720.
The old Jacobean pews were removed in the beginning of this century, and the woodwork from some of them was used to panel the church.
Another interesting feature of the tower are the 3 gargoyles, which have spouts in their mouths and throw rainwater clear of the walls.
Date the Church was built, dedicated or cornerstone laid: 01/01/1814
