The Shriner's Burns Institute in Boston is one of 22 hospitals that are supported by the Shriners of North America, a branch of Freemasonry specifically set up to support these hospitals, free of charge to the families. Since 1922, the organization has helped over 865,000 children. The headquarters for the Shriners of North America is in Tampa, Florida, while local Shrine "Temples" are located throughout the world, including one in the Boston metropolitan area (Allepo Temple).
Boston is one of four of these hospitals that care for burns. In addition to providing the best care available, the Burns Institute also actively involved in research to improve techniques and treatments. The hospital was established in 1968 and was expanded in 1996. There are currently 30 beds, here.
The Burns Institute is located in the West End of Boston, near two other well known hospitals: Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
