Wharton State Forest, in south Jersey, encompasses approximately 1,000 acres of protected forest. Due to the vast area of woodland, which tends to be very dry a good portion of the year, forest fires are always a threat.

Atsion Village is an historic reminder of an 18th century southern Jersey iron town. The Mullica River was dammed by Joseph Wharton to provide the water and mill neccessary for the town's productions, creating Atsion Lake. In the 1950's this historic site became part of Wharton State Forest.

The area of the now deserted Village of Atsion has a clearing large enough for a base for fire fighting helicopters, with close proximity to a source of water for drops. It is also an area just off Route 206 in Shamong Township, providing easier access for ground units. The Ranger Station sits here, int he old General Store of Atsion Village. It is a popular spot as well for staging off road trail runs and horse trailers.

Just this past August (2007), a large forest fire destroyed some 10,000 acres of Wharton...and Atsion became a hub for the fire units.
There aren't any visible windsocks, nor a visible concrete pad, but it has been designated with signs and new coverage...
