A tree has grown in the centre of the village since the time of Elizabeth I and the tradition is continued today. The present oak replaced a diseased elm in 1984.

There are two plaques on this tree.
The first one says:
'The Cross Tree,
A tree has stood here since Elizabeth I, the wall and seat were rebuilt to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.'

The second one says
'An oak tree was planted here by South Tawton Parish Council in 1984.'
