Every town and settlement in New Zealand has its history. Together, they form the story of our people, of Maori and Pakeha. In Katikati you can see that history everyday, not in a gallery or a museum, but by walking down the main street.

Welcome to Katikati, the Mural Town of New Zealand, and the Gateway to the Bay of Plenty. Katikati is just a half hour's drive from Tauranga, ninety minutes from Hamilton and Rotorua, and two hours from Auckland and Taupo. Come and see the Murals!
To promote the town of Katikati, a group of residents got together and came up with a concept of using decorative murals to create a distinctive atmosphere. Ten years on, Katikati has 37 works of art in and around the main street ranging from murals, sculptures and carvings to tukutuku panel. Katikati Open Air Art Inc. prides itself on creating the first Open Air Art Gallery in New Zealand.
The whole display is featured on buildings along the main street of Katikati with murals depicting the district's colourful history. You can wander down the street and discover these beautiful paintings on walls around various corners, alleys and building frontages along Main Street.
This website provides a map of the town showing where all the murals are situated and has links to each individual mural with the close-up details, history and artist name supplied.
The given co-ordinates will take you to the centre of Main Street where you can begin your Mural Walk.
