The
National Park Service describes the Louisiana State Capitol Building as "a 34-story, 450-foot Alabama limestone-clad skyscraper, is an excellent example of a greatly simplified classicism with Art Deco details that were in vogue for monumental buildings in the late 1920s." The building was conceived by Huey P. Long during the great depression - three years after its completion, he would be assassinated in its halls.
Striking metalwork is everywhere, including a relief map of Louisiana in the floor of the lobby and the doors to elevators and the legislative chambers. The lobby is covered in marble, and the legislative chambers are quite beautiful.
