Once a year over Labor Day, approximately 40k people gather on BLM land to celebrate outsider art, free expression, and an alternative economy. For a few days each year, Black Rock City becomes the 7th largest city in Nevada. While the event is known for drugs, nudity, and techno-music, a large number of participants are responsible, relatively ordinary citizens and come for the open-minded attitude and ethos of participation.
Tickets cost upward of $200 for the week, and you must bring everything you need to survive the harsh desert climate AND pack it out, too. Great place to see art, art cars, and spontaneous participatory events. The event culminates on Saturday night with the burning of the "Man" statue.
For more information see
the official Burning Man website.
Coordinates given are for the central "Man" statue from 2006. Google Earth has made a special flyover to map the city. The BLM requires the event to alternate between 2 locations as a test of the impact the event is making on the playa lakebed. Generally, the event is in approximately the same location every year.
