Silver Lake is a 167 acre manmade lake that drains into the upper St. Jones River. Silver Lake was the initial result of damming of the upper St. Jones Creek in 1787, for grist and saw mills. The initial dams for Silver Lake were constructed entirely of wood, until the first concrete dam was constructed in 1912. The usage of the lake was dominated by mill operations until the City of Dover purchased Silver Lake in 1938, and subsequently the last mill in 1943, for public recreation. The concrete dam was reinforced in 1944 to return the lake to its normal pooling, due to an overflow failure in 1943.
