RAF-mindesmærke

Den 8. januar 1943 om aftenen foretog et antal fly fra Royal Air force mineudlægning i Nordsøen og Østersøen for at genere den tyske søtrafik.

Efter et angreb af tyske natjægere blev et Lancasterfly ramt og brød i brand.

Maskinen styrtede ned på dette sted i Søst Skov, og af de 7 besætningsmedlemmer blev de 5 fundet dræbt på nedstyrtningsstedet. De 2 andre blev senere fundet i Lillebælt. Det dybe krater i skovbunden stammer fra flystyrtet.

Navnene på de 5 flyvere er:

Sgt. A. R. A. Colonna
Sgt. J. Hutchinson
Sgt. J. H. Lightfoot
Sgt. D. B. Mogg
Sgt. S. Wright

De ligger alle begravet på kirkegården i Aabenraa.

Efter styrtet blev der af en ung mand fra Rise opsat et "illegalt" minde, et hjemmelavet trækors ved nedstyrtningsstedet. For denne handling blev han idømt 10 dages hæfte ved retten.

Den 8. januar 1983 blev den nuværende mindesten rejst af skovdistriktet. Teksten på stenen er den samme, som på det hjemmelavet trækors fra 1943.

 

RAF - memorial
A number of airplanes from Royal Air force did in the evening of 8. January 1943 lay mines at the North and the Baltic seas to hamper the German sea traffic.

After an attack from German night fighter a Lancaster plane was hit.

The plane crashed at this spot in the forrest of Søst. Out of 7 crew members 5 was found killed at the crash location. The 2 others were later found in Lillebælt. The deep crater to the forest floor is from the plane crash.

The names of the 5 crew members are:
Sgt. A. R. A. Colonna
Sgt. J. Hutchinson
Sgt. J. H. Lightfoot
Sgt. D. B. Mogg
Sgt. S. Wright

They are all buried at the cemetery in Aabenraa.

A home-made memorial was "illegally" placed here by a young man from Rise. He got sentenced 10 days imprisonment by the court for this.

The current memorial was raised by forest district on 8th. January 1983. The text is equal to the text from the home-made memorial from 1943.
