Many years ago when the turnpike roads were built, where there was a hill an extra horse was attached to a cart/coach at a certain point to help pull the vehicles up the hill, then unattached at the take off stone as the extra horse was no longer required.
There is a tethering ring rock beside the marker stone for the horseman to tie the extra horse up, waiting for collection.
