The land for the cemetery which covers 66 acres and opened in 1873,was offered by the Duke of Devonshire for a nominal fee.
Prior to the opening of Barrow cemetery most burials had to go to the nearby town of Dalton in Furness.
In 1962 a crematorium was added to the grounds of the cemetery.
The public pathway that runs through the top section of the cemetery is a popular walk with the locals of Barrow,there are good views over the town and out to sea,many seats have been donated and placed along the pathway.
