Set in the side of Loughrigg Fell, are Rydale Caves, the caves which are throwbacks to the days of slate mining in the area cave, the entrance to the lower cave is flooded to a depth of a few inches to nearly a foot, but safe passage can be achieved by walking across the large stepping stones which have been placed here, inside the cave, and once your eyes become accustomed to the light is a small tarn or pond, which is complete with goldfish which have been placed here years ago,and seem to have survived well, the caves are fascinating.
