The Plank Road was laid out in the late 1840's. The road was supposed to link St. Charles with with the neighboring community of Sycamore however the plank road only extended three miles west of the toll house. The road was constructed by P.J. Burchell and O.M. Butler from planks cut from trees from north of St. Charles. The brick toll house is from where Edward Conner and Dr. Junkett collected tolls and operated the road. The plank road was short lived and the planks torn up after seven years due to the difficultly with continued maintenance. The road continued to operate as a turnpike after this. The toll house is now a private residence ~ paraphrased from St. Charles Public Library website
