The area known as the Golden Triangle was once famous for growing poppies for the illegal opium trade. Today it is just an interesting stopping point on a tour of northern-most Thailand. You park, go to the stand and buy a boat ticket and climb down some really steep steps to take a seat in a very small long tail boat (life jackets provided thankfully). You shove off from Thailand and in just a few minutes ride you are facing a small islet that lies in the junction of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers. To your left is Thailand, in front of you is Myanmar (Burma), and to your right is Laos. The river people say that the rivers' waters are 2 different colors with the Mekong more of a brownish tint. I really couldn't see a difference, but then I was worried about that tiny little boat getting there and back.
