The North Walney island nature reserve starts 150 yards north of Walney airfield,and extends to the Northern Tip of the Island.a distance of about 2 miles.

The nature reserve here at Walney Island is home to the rare Natterjacl Toad,which is the UK's rarest amphibian and found in only 40 sites in the whole of the UK.
The reserve is also home to a staggering 400 different species of moths and butterflies.There are also an incredible 450 diffewrent species of flowering plants to be found here,including wild pansies,burnet rose,and ladies bedstraw,but the reserve and indeed Walneys proudest attraction is the Walney Geranium,which grows wild nowhere else in the world.
The marsh supports sea aster,sea lavender,and several species of orchid.
130 species of birds have been recorded here such as Kestrels,Sparrowhawks,Merlins,Perigrines and Hen Harriers,also Short eared owls are frequent visitors to be seen hunting at dusk.
On the reserve are many large ponds or tarns,where swans and many other water birds can be seen.
The reserve is always open,and admission is free.
