One of the gardens on the campus and part of the Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum is a formal Japanese garden, which was a birthday gift to Edith Gould by her husband.
The Japanese Garden is offset from the Italian garden, and one enters through through a machiai(gateway), and the roji (path) leads past a restored sukiya (teahouse). A small wooden footbridge is perfectly placed under a Japanese Umbrella Tree.
The arboretum, established in 1989, is named after Sister Mary Grace Burns, who was the chairperson of the biology department and professor of biology from 1927 to 1968. The arboretum is open during the day, but most visitors will have to park off campus and check in at the gate to get entry into the campus to experience the gardens (free of charge).
