Local Haumoana artist Peni "Lucy P" Edwards is the carver responsible for the creations, carving them from Macrocarpa tree trunks, with the first sculpture co-funded by Creative NZ.
The sculptures were designed after extensive research of the area and consultation with the various Keirunga groups and societies.
The first tree trunk was carved in October 2006, the second was finished in January 2007 and now the final addition to the Keirunga Gardens new sculpture is complete.
The trilogy of brushes and their accompanying paint palette have been dubbed "paintbrush garden" by young children who visit Keirunga.
It is very appealing for the local children who visit the nearby playground as the third sculpture, a paint palette, incorporates a tunnel through the tree to encourage interaction.
The sculptures represent the artistic history and community of Keirunga whilst combining an element of ‘play’ for the children.
The completion of the sculptures has added a final touch to a unique play area and the name ‘paintbrush’ garden was liked so much by Peni Edwards she has decided to officially name it that.
