The plaque in the cemetery reads:
Established in 1869 with the founding of Fort Sill, the Post Cemetery is a hallowed burial ground for soldier, Indian and pioneer alike.
Until the 1880's this was the only established cemetery in this part of Oklahoma. Indian Mission Cemeteries followed, then those of towns and cities, as the country was gradually opened to settlement.
Today, though one of many, this cemetery's history is unique. Together with the stone buildings of the old post, it endures as a monumental landmark for the past, the present, and the future.
Valor, patriotism, and service in freedom's cause were the watchwords by which the hundreds of distinguished veterans now resting here, lived and died. May we Americans of today unfailingly carry on these great traditions to which they were devoted.
