The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of Tongariro National Park’s special gifts. A cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes and magnificent views combine to make this an enjoyable and memorable trip.

This Alpine Crossing hike spans the length of Mt Tongariro (18.5 Kilometres) and takes about 7-9 hours. You start from the Mangatepopo Valley and walk over towards the Ketetahi road end as this will minimise the climbing involved.

Thousands of walkers pass this sign each day during the Summer season. Hundreds are rescued from the track with injuries or even worse. Many people die attempting this track.

Although often described as a walking track it is in reality an alpine trek (or tramp in New Zealand terminology) and a change of weather for the worse can make the crossing difficult and even dangerous if you are not well prepared. It is important to have the appropriate clothing, equipment and fitness level.

PLEASE NOTE:
*This rugged alpine trek is exposed and climbs to 1900m so trampers should have experience trekking in alpine conditions.
*Not recommended to attempt the crossing when wind is strong, or there is poor visibility.
*Trampers need to be prepared for the changeable alpine weather with tramping boots, windproof and rainproof jacket, trousers, and warm layers, warm hat and gloves.
*We recommend you treat all water in the Park. Water from the upper Mangatepopo stream, Emerald Lakes and Ketetahi Springs is not suitable for drinking due to high mineral content.
*There is no drinkable water available between the head of the Mangatepopo Valley and Ketetahi Hut.
