Deeping St James bridge over the river weland bridge was made in 1651 to cross the river weland.
For 200 years the River Welland formed an important trading highway between the sea and Stamford but rapidly declined in the 1850s and was last used in 1863
The boats carrying goods were typically of 7 ft beam with a shallow draft and were the horse drawn. the Welland has a good claim to the title of England's first, (post-Roman) Canal.
