An act of Parliament in 1571 authorised to improvements to the river Welland to make it navigable from Stamford to the sea. These did not occur until occur until the 17th century, the new canalised river finally being open for trade in the 1660s.
This lock was the first of the 12 locks to be built between keepiing and Stamford each lock pen being 60 ft long and 12 ft wide. For the next 200 years until the event of the railways this river played a vital role in the trade of the Deepenings.
