The line takes thousand of visitors through 3.5 miles of glorious scenery as it twists and turns through the Backbarrow gorge to the southern end of Lake Windermere. It terminates at Lakeside where the lake ferries connect offering a cruise along the 10.5 miles of England's longest lake to Ambleside.

The Furness Railway Company was an independent railway operating between 1846 and 1923. Originally conceived as a mineral railway, it later played a major role in the development of the town of Barrow in Furness, and in the development of the Lake District Tourist industry.
