This stone has seen better days. Currently very worn and eroded. As particles are exfoliated the veins of the rock, which are slightly harder, are left proud and visible.

The road from the old quay was the first modern road - a 'Parliamentary road' built in 1810, half paid by the Government and half by the landowner. It ran the five miles to Lamlash. It wasn't until 1851 that the coast road around the island was complete, and 1897 before the first car arrived on Arran. Information from 'The Milestones of Arran' by Ruth & Alan Thompson. For more details about the milestones and the book, see milestone 45, waymark: WM3HF7
