The present church of St Mary's dates from the second half of the 15th century. It is believed that the chancel contains parts from the earlier church which stood on the site. Brixton did not become a full Parochial church until 18 April 1477 when it and the new burial ground were consecrated by the Bishop of Exeter. Prior to that date the villagers had to carry their dead to Plympton for burial. Restoration carried out in 1887 and 1894 destroyed some features of the church including 16th century glass, mediaeval roof bosses, bench ends and the rood screen. The church had two chapels of which only one survives.
The bell tower contains five bells all bearing the date 1737.
