The Isle of Arran lies off the west coast of Scotland in the Firth of Clyde. It commands the approach to the Clyde and Glasgow. Monarchs of various states have always been interested in Arran.

There has been a fortress at Brodick since the fifth century, when an Irish tribe came over and founded the kingdom of Dalriada. The current Castle has been extended and altered several times but parts go back to the mid-16th century.

Brodick Castle was the home of the Hamiltons for nearly 500 years before coming to the National Trust for Scotland in 1957. In Victorian times shooting parties were held there.

1947 was a busy year for the Royals. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip announced their engagement on 9th July. Shortly after they went travelling with Elizabeth's father, George VI and her sister Princess Margaret. July 25th saw them at Arran and Brodick Castle. A line of oaks was planted at the Castle to commemorate their visit. They were married in the autumn on 20th November.

Interestingly, Prince Philip's plaque says "Prince Philip of Greece". He was born 'Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark'. He joined the Royal Navy in 1939 and after the war, in February 1947, became a naturalised British subject. Prince Philip was required to choose a surname in order to continue his career in the Royal Navy, and adopted Mountbatten, the name of his mother's British relatives.

The trees can be found in a line along one side of the car park, each has a plaque in front.
