According to the attached webpage: Located just east of Cleveland, the Kirtland Temple was the first house of worship for the followers of Joseph Smith, Jr., who founded the Latter Day Saint movement in western New York in 1830.

Kirtland Temple Historic Center

Part of the reason for leaving the location was as a result of a bank collapse of The Kirtland Safety Society, an unchartered bank operated by some of the church members.
