There has been a fortress here since the fifth century, when an Irish tribe came over and founded the kingdom of Dalriada. The current building has been extended and altered several times but parts go back to the mid-16th century.

'A fortress has been on the site since at least the fifth century, when Gaelic invaders from Antrim expanded their kingdom of Dál Riata. By the tenth century Norse influence had grown, and Arran formed part of Sudreys or 'southern isles', administered either from Dublin or the Orkneys (Nordreys) and nominally under the control of The King of Norway. This continued until the Treaty of Perth in 1266, three years after the Battle of Largs, across from Arran on the mainland.' Wikipedia.
The Dukes of Hamilton have owned Brodick Castle from around 1503, when the Earldom of Arran was granted to 2nd Lord Hamilton (James) by his cousin James IV.
The castle had a major alteration in 1844 by the 10th Duke of Hamilton and his wife, Princess Marie of Baden. The high tower and magnificent Victorian rooms were designed by James Gillespie Graham.
The daughter of the 12th Duke of Hamilton, Mary, married James Graham, 6th Duke of Montrose in 1906, and restored the gardens. Since her death in 1957 it has been owned by the National Trust for Scotland.
The grounds have become a country park, which is open all year. The house is also open. See: (
