This is the oldest church in St Petersburg. Construction began in 1712 soon after the city was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. The gilded needle shaped spire was built by a Dutch Artisan German von Bolis. At the top there's a figure of a flying angel bearing a cross. The spire is 404 feet high. The church is located on an island in the Neva River and it's a prominent landmark from both sides of the river in downtown St. Petersburg.
Until a TV tower reached a greater height a few years ago this was the tallest structure in the city.
