The chapel of St.Mary's at Rydal was built in 1824 by Lady Fleming,of Rydal Hall,William Wordsworth helped to choose the site,which was originally an orchard,the gallery in the church was reserved for the Fleming family.

William Wordsworth who lived nearby at Rydal Mount worshipped here.
Their family pews are on each side of the aisle at the front of the church.
Wordsworth was church warden here from 1833-1834.
St.Mary's is built on rocky ground below Nab Scar,so there are no burials here at Rydal.
Next to the church is Dora's field named after and in honour of Wordsworths daughter Dora,who died in 1847,the field is open to the public and shows a magnificent display of golden daffodils every Spring.
There are a number of memorial windows in the church,the East one is dedicated to George Le Fleming,who died in 1877,on the South side is a window in memory of Dr.Thomas Arnold,headmaster of Rugby,another honours 2 stepdaughters of Dora Wordsworth,Williams daughters,a 3rd commemorates one of queen Victoria's physicians William Fox.
