YEALMPTON stands just above the head of the Yealm estuary. The earliest mention of a church at Yealmpton occurs in a charter dated 1225. In the church is a list of most of incumbents since 1297. By the middle of the nineteenth century the old church was in very poor condition. The Nave and chancel was rebuilt by William Butterfield, in 1850, in the Decorated style. Mr. John Betjeman considers it "the most amazing" Victorian church in Devon. The walls are inlaid with a variety of local marbles (polished limestones), and in the pillars a black and a grey marble alternate. All of the £7000 cost of the rebuilding was paid for Edmund Pollexfen Bastard the occupant of nearby Kitley house. There are a number of memorials to local families, notably a good brass to Sir John Crocker of Lyneham (1508)
In 1911 the old tower was still standing but crumbling. An attempt was made to repair it with out avail and a new tower was started in 1915 and completed in the middle of the First World War. The tower contains six bells, the oldest have 1779 cast onto them.
