Thirlmere lake in the lake district of Cumbria supplies Manchester with water, the water travels a distance of 95 miles,an takes 40 million gallons a day to the city.
There are no pumping stations on the whole of the 95 miles, the system works by gravity, the brilliantly engineered route closely follows a 500 feet contour.
The Water on it's way to Manchester crosses the river Lune here by a pipe bridge, named appropriately enough as "Waterworks bridge" the stone bridge is also a crossing for walkers, having a walkway along the top,and the flood markings can be found on the Southern end of the bridge,at the bottom of the steps.
