The Capitol Building was designed to have a dome like most state capitol building. But when the Capitol Building was being built, there was a shortage of structure steel for domestic use due to World War I, so the planned dome was never built. There are over ten State Capitols that do not have domes, but Oklahoma is the only one that was designed to have a dome that was never completed.
After years of planning, construction of the dome began April 2001 and was completed in November in 2002. The dome is 157 feet in height above the existing roof. The Capitol Building was now complete.
