The Observatory was built under the direction of Maharajh Sawai Jai Singh around 1730. He was a man of Science and a Soldier. The accuracy of the instruments used for observation is undoubted. You have to wonder at the technical ability coupled with the woderful workmanship. Marble carved in 3 curving planes. Wonderful.
We visited the observatory on warm and wonderful December day. The wall surrounding the observatory in which this sundial is placed was alive with monkeys - running around making lots of noise.
We had a guide that day, one Mr Daulat Singh Rajawat, a professor at a local university. He wrote the guide book on the observatory and was a mine of information. He met us at our hotel and took us to the observatory via many other sites of Interest in the city like the Pink Palace etc.
Prof Rajawat signed out guidebook. It was the 17th Of December 2007.We had a great day.
You really must go. You will be staggered by what the people of Rajhastan achieved in the mid 18thC.
