The deserted village of Wharram Percy was once a thriving medieval community.The deserted village set on the side of a remote picturesque valley in the Yorkshire Wolds,was abandoned in 1500 leaving only the church,to serve for a further 400 years.

In 1517 the Lord of the manor at this time evicted the last 4 families from the village of Wharram Percy and demolished their houses,to make way for more sheep pasture as England's wool trade was taking off.
This only left the church of St.Martin.

St.Martin's continued to be used for a further 400 years,until a new church was built nearby at Thixendale in 1870,from then the church fell into disrepair,and the tower finally collapsed in a storm in 1959.

The church started life as a small private chapel,in the mid 10th. century .
By the 12th. century the church had been enlarged,it had a a round apse,thatched roof and small rounded windows,but no tower at this time.
By the mid to late 12th.century a tower and South aisle were added .

Wharram Percy can be found 6miles SE of Malton in Yorkshire on an unclassified road 1/2 a mile S.of Wharram Le Street.
