The village of Wharram Percy was first laid out in the 10th century, and is mentioned briefly in the Domesday Book.
It survived the devastation caused by William the Conqueror, and later the Black Death, though some of the population of the village did die from the plague.
The village was finally abandoned soon after 1500, when the then Lord of the manor evicted the last 4 families and demolished their houses to make way for more sheep pasture as England's wool trade was taking off.
