Catacol is a small village on the north of Arran. People used to farm and fish until they were cleared off the land to make way for sheep, and told to just fish. Remains of the fishing can be seen, including an old barking house where oak bark was boiled in kettles and the fishing nets were then steeped in the brew as a preservative. An old winch and anchor sit patiently above the shore.

The place became a fishing station based on herring until it was fished out. The fishermen kept their boats in a natural harbour called The Canal behind a large shingle spit.

Great walking and a good bar in the hotel. Lochranza is 1.5 miles around the coast.
