Louis Riel (1844-1885) was a Metis leader and Canadian politician. He lead the Red River Rebellion against the Federal Government which was instrumental in creating the Province of Manitoba. He was forced into exile but elected 3 times to the Canadian House of Commons. After leading the North-West Rebellion, he was arrested and hanged as a traitor.
There has recently been attempts to pardon him and also to name him as a Father of Confederation.
The controversy continues.
