The present church of St.Peter's Finsthwaite was built in 1874,and was consecrated on the 8th.December 1874 by the Bishop of Calisle,Henry Whitehead.

The churchyard cemetery is well maintained with strategic fencing placed here and there to preserve the grass sections from short cutting.
There is one grave in particular which is worth mentioning and that is of
Clementina Johannes Sobieski Douglas of Waterside,who was buried 16th. of May 1771,and it is widely believed she was the daughter of Prince Charles Edward,the young pretender by Clemintina Walkinshaw,and kept in seclusion in this quiet place,and many stories have been told about her in that guise.
No one however has produced any convincing evidence that the prince was the father of any other child but his acknowledged daughter Charlotte,Duchess of Albany.
