This location at Rostock’s market place has been the city council’s meeting place ever since the town was founded in 1265. The current building dates back to the year 1300; originally it only had four towers. The remaining three towers were added in the early 1500s, as can be seen in this picture drawn in 1583.

The building was severely damaged by bad weather in 1718 and was completely remodeled by Saxonian architect Zacharias Voigt in 1726.

Again severely damaged by a fire in 1978, the building was rebuilt to its old beauty in 1990.

Das Rathaus in Rostock ist ein aus drei Häusern bestehender Gruppenbau, dessen Entstehung bis in das 13. Jahrhundert zurückreicht. Damit ist es der älteste erhaltene Profanbau der Stadt. Das Rostocker Rathaus gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Profanbauten der Backsteingotik im Ostseeraum, gleichrangig mit den Rathäusern in Lübeck und in Stralsund.[1] Der mittelalterliche Bau ist auf Grund barocker Vor- und Umbauten heute allerdings zu großen Teilen verdeckt.
