The swing bridge was replaced in 1865, and was further overhauled in November 1878.
in the past this had to be opened manually and took what seemed like a thousand turns on the wheel now is operated mechanically, but can be tempermental at times as opening is restricted at busy times, and you then get a build up of narrow boats waiting.
Easily the most picturesque pub around Hemel Hempstead. Packed with the "Beemer" and GTI set, definitely the place to be seen. Even so, it’s a lovely place to sit outside on a hot summer’s evening, or even for a pub lunch.
The entertainment is provided by various boat owners, trying to fathom out how to work the swing bridge across the canal.
Be warned though if you don’t close the bridge properly you could be fined 10 shillings! as the sign says.
I couldn't find when the bridge was placed here.
