This was one of the most devastating train wrecks in Canadian history. The train crew of 6001 were killed in the crash but the passengers were killed by the fire that quickly spread though the old gas-lit wooden cars. Eighty-one were injured in the crash. Only seven of the victims could be identified. The remaining 24 were buried in a mass grave at the Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg.

On Labour Day, September 1, 1947, two steam locomotive passenger trains crashed in the town of Dugald, where the 6046 east bound Continental passenger train waited to let the 6001 Minaki Camper Special pass. The Minaki train did not take the siding and collided head on into the waiting Continental. Of all the passengers on the Winnipeg bound Minaki Special, thirty-one were known to have died and eighty-one were injured.
At the point of collision, the old gas-lit wooden cars on the 6001 burst into flames. Many Dugald residents risked their own safety to help at the scene, several of whom received commendations.
This memorial is dedicated, on the 60th anniversary, to those who did not survive the crash, their families and all affected by this tragedy.
