The Hilo Bayfront used to be the site of a bustling trading harbor town, until two devasting tsunamis hit in 1946 and 1960 wiped it out. Now, to avoid great losses of life and commerce, this area is now a memorial park.

We learned from a plaque in the park that this was the site of Shinmachi, a Japanese town that was devasted by the tsunami in 1946. After the cleanup, this park in itself was placed as a memorial of the people lost in this flood.
However, the most heartfelt memorial to these lost souls is a clock, which stands just off King Kamehameha Ave. It still stands, frozen in time for rememberance at the exact time of the tsunami in 1960...1:04 (am).
