In 1893 a group of local women formed a group called the Fortnightly Club. Their purpose was to follow various cultural pursuits. Their first project was book donations and the acquisition of a vacant room in a downtown store front where Eugene's first reading room was opened. This project grew into the Eugene Public Library. They drew the attention of Andrew Carnegie, an industrialist and philanthropist. Then with donated money, private gifts and the City of Eugene, Oregon's first Carnegie Library opened at the corner of 11th Avenue and Willamette. After 2 moves the library is in its third location in a beautifly designed building. The Eugene Public Library began as a Circulating Library in 1898, with the first building opening in l906.
